Visit the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau at MPI and ASAE
The Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau will be participating in MPI and ASAE next month. The American Society of Association Executives annual meeting takes place at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, over the dates of August 23 - 26, 2003. You'll find Maureen Buckley, and others from Boston, in booth #1739. Also of interest at ASAE will be the new BCEC featured during the ASAE Foundation Silent Auction. The Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau (GBCVB) and the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA) have donated a meeting package at the new Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (BCEC) to the Foundation of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). This donation equals the largest in the history of the Foundation's Silent Auction Program and is valued at approximately $300,000.
The package includes facility rental for an association meeting in late 2004 or beyond, subject to availability, at the new BCEC, opening in June 2004. When it opens the BCEC will be the largest convention facility in the Northeast with 515,000 square feet of contiguous exhibition space, 160,000 square feet of meeting space, 86 meeting rooms, 52 loading docks with drive- on access to the show floor, and a 41,000 square foot ballroom. Association executives unable to attend the Annual Meeting are eligible to bid on this auction item by e-mail (auction@asaenet.org) or fax (202-371- 2805) through August 23, or by designating a proxy to place a bid during the Hawaii meeting. The winning bidder on this package will be free to use as much space as needed for their meeting, based on historical use and forecasted growth. Special conditions on the package include a minimum room block of 2,000 rooms on peak night, if the building is used between 2004 and 2008, and a block of 2,500 rooms on peak night if the building is used in 2009 through 2012. This package includes facility rental charges only, and a minimum bid of $50,000 is required.

The state-of-the-art FleetCenter is a year round, 19,600-seat arena with three private restaurants and a 360-degree LED. The FleetCenter attracts many national profile events, including the 1999 and 2003 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball First and Second Rounds, the 2001 US Figure Skating Championships, the 1996 and 2000 US Gymnastics Trials, and the 1998 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Championship, the 1998 Wrestelmania and the 1996 NHL All-Star Game. YE OLDE UNION OYSTER HOUSE: The Union Oyster House was named a National Historic Landmark in May, 2003. It is the oldest continuously operating restaurant and oyster bar in the United States, and the oldest standing building in Boston's Georgian architecture. The building was the home of Isaiah Thomas, where he published the Massachusetts Spy, from 1771 - 1775; Louis Philippe, later King of France, was a guest and taught French to prominent Bostonians; and famous patrons have included Senator Daniel Webster, a regular in the 1840's and 1850's; and President John F. Kennedy, who would visit every Sunday at noon, when he was in Boston, and ate lobster stew. The Union Oyster House has several private function rooms ranging in capacity from 25 - 120 people.
